Apple’s next Apple Pencil could feature interchangeable magnetic tips to offer users different controls and drawing capabilities, according to a reputable leaker, who says three new changeable tips could offer specific functions for drawing, technical drawing and painting.

On X, formally Twitter, Apple researcher Majin Bu claims that based on information from sources, Apple’s upcoming “Apple Pencil 3” will have swappable tips for different drawing techniques that require precise input and drawing, such as fine painting brushstrokes or precise technical drawings.

As reported by AppleInsider, Apple has previously applied for patents for switchable Apple Pencil tips that would offer more variety to its users, by having interchangeable nibs that can change what the stylus can do, with the patent saying that the swap could cover many different types of data, such as “color, a shape, a thickness, a size, a brightness, or an opacity” of a marking.

Apple last updated the Apple Pencil in November 2018. It introduced several new features and improvements over the first-generation Apple Pencil including magnetic attachment to the side of comparable iPad models, gesture controls so users can double-tap the Pencil to switch between different tools in compatible apps, and a matte finish, providing a more comfortable grip and a premium feel compared to the first-generation Pencil.

The second-generation Apple Pencil also provides better accuracy and lower latency, providing a more responsive and precise writing and drawing experience.
