Apple has confirmed that macOS Tahoe, the next major software release, will be the final version to support Intel-based Macs. Going forward, all new macOS updates will be exclusively available to M-series machines, which were first introduced in 2020.
Matthew Firlik, Apple’s Senior Director of Developer Relations, made the announcement at WWDC25. “Apple Silicon enables us to achieve things that were once unimaginable, and it’s time for us to focus all our innovation there,” Firlik stated. He encouraged developers to ensure their apps are optimized for Apple Silicon, saying, “If you haven’t already, now is the time to help your users migrate to the Apple Silicon versions of your apps.”
Intel-based Macs receiving macOS Tahoe include the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro, the 2020 13-inch MacBook Pro, the 2020 27-inch iMac, and the 2019 Mac Pro. After macOS Tahoe, no further major updates for Intel-based machines are expected.
