Microsoft: Running multiple Office apps causes Copilot issues

Microsoft Copilot

Microsoft is investigating a bug that causes Copilot issues when multiple Office apps are running simultaneously on the same system.

According to a support document published on Friday, this bug impacts Microsoft 365 customers who launch Excel, Word, PowerPoint, OneNote, Publisher, and Access on the same system.

The issue is triggered when one Office application, such as Excel, has already initiated a WebView2 instance, while another app, like Word, attempts to start a second instance.

However, if the first application is closed, the Copilot pane in the second application will open without any issues.

"Multiple customers have reported issues with Office features that rely on WebView2, notably Copilot, Share, and Room Finder," Microsoft said.

"The most impactful symptom is the failure of the Copilot pane to launch when multiple Office applications are open simultaneously."

The Office team is currently working to resolve this issue and will share more information when additional details or a fix are available.

The company is also investigating another bug impacting Microsoft 365 customers that causes the classic Outlook email client to crash on launch, which can only be resolved via Exchange Online support.

Since the start of the year, Microsoft has also addressed a bug that broke email and calendar drag-and-drop functionalityin classic Outlook after installing Windows 24H2 updates, as well as a known issue causing CPU spikes when typing messages in classic Outlook.

More recently, Redmond fixed a bug that triggered classic Outlook crashes when starting new messages or opening emails and shared a temporary fix for an Outlook bug that triggered errors when opening encrypted emails sent from other organizations.

On Friday, it also resolved a false positive issue that prompted Defender for Endpoint customers to update their devices’ BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) firmware after incorrectly tagging it as outdated.
