iPhone 18 to feature new Samsung camera sensor, ending Sony’s exclusive supply

by Wire Tech

iPA recent report indicates that the upcoming iPhone 18 will include at least one new sensor, which will be supplied by Samsung rather than Sony, reports 9to5Mac. This shift marks a significant change in Apple’s sourcing strategy for iPhone sensors, ending Sony’s long-standing exclusivity in this area.

According to Ming-Chi Kuo, who provided the report, Samsung is set to supply Apple with 1/2.6-inch 48MP ultra-wide CMOS image sensors (CIS) beginning in 2026. This move breaks Sony’s years-long monopoly on providing CIS for iPhones. Samsung has reportedly established a dedicated team to handle Apple’s sensor needs.

Details on the main and telephoto sensors remain unclear, and it is possible that Sony may continue to produce these components. The reasons behind this change have not been disclosed, but a plausible explanation could be Apple’s strategy to diversify its suppliers. By using multiple suppliers, Apple can mitigate production risks and strengthen its negotiating position regarding pricing, potentially setting the stage for future shifts in supplier relationships.

The introduction of Samsung as a sensor supplier could lead to increased competition between Sony and Samsung, likely driving advancements in both performance and features. This competition is expected to accelerate the development of camera technology for future iPhone models.
