Threads Was The Most Downloaded iOS App in November

Threads continues to linger in the most downloaded app charts, with Meta’s Twitter-like platform sitting at number 6 overall for November, which was the same spot that it occupied in the October downloads ranking.

Most downloaded apps - November 2024

As you can see in this overview, provided by AppFigures, Instagram was the most downloaded app in the world in November, followed by TikTok, WhatsApp and Facebook. ChatGPT rounds out the top five, with Meta maintaining its overall dominance of the app charts (3 of the top 5 apps).

And Threads is also holding its momentum.

Total Threads downloads were down slightly for the month (12 million in October), but it was still the most downloaded app on iOS in the period.

And notably, Bluesky isn’t listed (currently ranked outside the top 100 iOS apps in the U.S.), nor is X. X is sitting at 54th on the iOS downloads chart right now, down from 38th last month. But neither app is close to challenging Threads in terms of new downloads as yet.

Still, X has a lot more active users (570 million versus 275 million), and Bluesky has gained a lot of momentum in recent weeks. Though Bluesky has seemingly also lost some ground of late, which could be because Threads has copied all of its key features.

Either way, it’s interesting to note the enduring popularity of Threads, or at least, the enduring interest in the app, which has seen more people downloading it over time. The trick for Meta know lies in keeping those new users coming back, in order to grow Threads into its next billion user platform.

And it is gaining traction, Threads is increasing its user growth momentum over time as well, while it’s also reassessing its content restrictions and moderation rules, with a view to making the platform more of a real-time news and info stream.

It’s not clear that Threads is going to become a true challenger for the platform formerly known as Twitter, but the data suggests that it has the opportunity to do so, at the least. If Threads can maintain this momentum, and get more influential users to keep posting, then it does seem like it will be on track to become the next big thing.

Some remain concerned about concentrating too much power and influence for Meta, and X still seems to have a fairly dedicated core user base. But with so many people at least giving Threads a look, it will become a more significant force in 2025.
