Apple has announced that AirPods Max will soon support lossless and ultra-low latency audio, thanks to a new software update arriving next month. The update will unlock 24-bit/48 kHz lossless playback, allowing users to enjoy Apple Music’s entire library of over 100 million songs in pristine quality.
In a press release shared Monday, Apple said: “Next month, a new software update will bring lossless audio and ultra-low latency audio to AirPods Max, delivering the ultimate listening experience and even greater performance for music production.”
The enhancements are designed not only for audiophiles, but also for creators and gamers. “Lossless audio and ultra-low latency audio enable music creators to fully utilize AirPods Max throughout their entire professional workflow on Logic Pro and other music creation apps,” Apple noted.
Gamers and livestreamers will also benefit from dramatically reduced lag. The company says latency is now on par with the built-in speakers on Mac, iPad, and iPhone — making gameplay and live-streaming smoother and more immersive than ever.
The new capabilities will be available as a free firmware update in April alongside iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, and macOS Sequoia 15.4, exclusively for the USB-C version of AirPods Max.
Apple launched the latest AirPods Max model late last year.
AirPods Max are priced at $499 and come in five colors: Midnight, Starlight, Blue, Purple, and Orange.
In addition, Apple has introduced a new USB-C to 3.5mm audio cable, available starting today for $39. The cable allows users to connect AirPods Max to traditional 3.5mm audio sources — such as airplane entertainment systems — or link an iPhone or iPad to external speakers and car stereos.
