Apple updates HomePod and HomePod mini to software version 18 with SharePlay support

by Wire Tech

Apple has released HomePod Software 18, coinciding with the launch of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. This update is available for both the HomePod and HomePod mini.

One of the key updates in HomePod Software 18 is the ability to manually select a Home Hub, rather than having HomeKit automatically assign one. This is particularly helpful for users who own multiple HomePods or Apple TV devices.

The update also introduces a new SharePlay feature, allowing multiple users to control what’s playing on a HomePod via Apple Music. By bringing an iPhone close to another iPhone, users can add songs to a playlist and control playback seamlessly.

Additionally, AirPlay now supports Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos, enhancing the audio experience when streaming from an iPhone or iPad to the HomePod. As Apple’s release notes state:

“Software version 18 introduces SharePlay so you can share control of your Apple Music playlist on iPhone or iPad and guests can contribute to what’s playing on HomePod. This update also includes bug fixes and stability improvements.”
