Garmin app update angers users as new monthly subscription required to features

by Wire Tech

Garmin users are voicing frustration after the company announced it will begin charging a monthly fee for access to some of its new features.

The fitness tech brand—known for its smartwatches, bike computers, and health-focused devices—revealed on Thursday that it’s launching a premium subscription service called Connect+, priced at $6.99/£6.99 per month.

For years, Garmin stood out by offering its fitness features free with the purchase of its devices, avoiding the subscription model adopted by competitors like Whoop. That made this shift particularly surprising for longtime users.

Garmin emphasized that existing features will remain free. The new subscription will unlock extras like AI-generated health summaries, enhanced graphs, and improved tools for monitoring others’ activity.

Still, the announcement has sparked concern. Some users worry future features might be locked behind the paywall, and many are frustrated that they invested in high-end Garmin devices under the assumption that updates and new tools would continue to be included at no additional cost.
