India wants Apple to add USB-C to older iPhone models

by Wire Tech

The Indian government is pressing Apple to include USB-C on all iPhone models sold within the country, even those equipped with the Lightning port like the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 series. This mandate calls for Apple to redesign its already launched models to incorporate a universal USB-C charging port by 2025.

Amidst this pressure, Apple has reportedly engaged in discussions with Indian government officials, advocating for exemptions to be included in the legislation for certain older iPhone models. As per a Reuters‘ report, Apple highlighted in the meeting that compliance with the legislation could impede its ability to meet the production targets outlined in India’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, as documented by Reuters’ meeting minutes.

The PLI initiative, a flagship endeavour of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, incentives electronic manufacturers in India through fiscal benefits tied to fresh investments and annual increments in phone sales. Notably, Apple’s suppliers like Foxconn have extensively utilised this program to bolster the manufacturing of iPhones within the country.

Apple informed Indian officials during the meeting that only the iPhone 15 features the new universal charging port. They conveyed that the “design of the earlier products cannot be changed.”
