Manchester’s Bee Network launches Apple Pay Express Mode

Manchester’s Bee Network has launched Apple Pay Express Mode, making travel across the city’s buses and trams faster and more convenient. The new feature allows passengers to pay using their iPhone or Apple Watch — without needing to wake or unlock their device.

Even if an iPhone runs out of battery, users can still tap and travel using Express Mode, mirroring the functionality already available on London’s Transport for London (TfL) network.

Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham said: “We are making great strides to make the Bee Network more reliable and user-friendly. A big part of that is offering payment options that fit people’s lifestyles, and technology plays a key role. That’s why we’re excited to bring Apple Pay Express Mode to our customers.”

“Following the successful launch of tap and go, the Bee Network is proud to be the first integrated public transport system outside London to offer Express Mode. This not only makes travelling on our buses and trams quicker and simpler but also opens the door to new, innovative ways for people to get around using their iPhone and Apple Watch.”

Originally launched in New York City with the MTA, Apple Pay Express Mode has since been adopted in major global cities including London, Tokyo, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, San Francisco, and Sydney.
