Microchip Technology discloses cyberattack impacting operations

by Wire Tech

American chipmaker Microchip Technology Incorporated has disclosed that a cyberattack impacted its systems over the weekend, disrupting operations across multiple manufacturing facilities.

Headquartered in Chandler, Arizona, the company has roughly 123,000 customers across multiple industry sectors, including industrial, automotive, consumer, aerospace and defense, communications, and computing markets.

Due to an incident, some Microchip Technology manufacturing facilities operate at reduced capacity, affecting the company's ability to meet orders. Microchip Technology also had to take steps to manage the situation, such as shutting down some systems and isolating the affected ones following the breach.

"On August 17, 2024, Microchip Technology Incorporated (the "Company") detected potentially suspicious activity involving its information technology ("IT") systems. Upon detecting the issue, the Company began taking steps to assess, contain and remediate the potentially unauthorized activity," Microchip Technology revealed in a SEC filing on Tuesday.

"On August 19, 2024, the Company determined that an unauthorized party disrupted the Company's use of certain servers and some business operations."

Microchip Technology is currently evaluating the extent and impact of the cyberattack with the assistance of external cybersecurity experts. The company is also working to restore affected IT systems and return to normal business operations.

"As the Company's investigation is ongoing, the full scope, nature and impact of the incident are not yet known," it added in today's filing. "As of the date of this filing, the Company has not yet determined whether the incident is reasonably likely to materially impact the Company's financial condition or results of operations."

While the company has not yet disclosed the nature of the incident, the SEC filing suggests it was ransomware. However, no ransomware operation has claimed responsibility for the attack.

A Microchip Technology spokesperson was not immediately available for comment when contacted by BleepingComputer earlier today.
