Microsoft blocks Windows 11 24H2 on two ASUS models due to crashes

by Wire Tech

Microsoft is warning of Windows crashing with the blue screen of death on some ASUS laptop models when trying to upgrade to the latest version of the operating system, Windows 11 version 24H2.

Microsoft acknowledged the problem in a bulletin late last week, noting that it impacts ASUS X415KA and X515KA laptop models.

The technology giant explained that it is working with the laptop vendor to resolve the issue and that until a solution is found, devices at risk of getting a blue screen of death (BSOD) when trying to complete the installation of the operating system will not receive a prompt to update Windows.

“After attempting to update to Windows 11, version 24H2, some ASUS devices, specifically the X415KA and X515KA models, might encounter an issue where the system is unable to complete the update,” Microsoft explains.

“During the update process, devices might experience a blue screen with an error message and cannot complete the installation of version 24H2.”

Microsoft suggests that users of impacted ASUS computer models refrain from attempting to manually update to version 24H2, be it through the Windows 11 Installation Assistant or using a media creation tool.

Those facing BSOD errors on their computer may follow Microsoft’s instructions to resolve the problem and get their computer back to a working state.

These update problems come only two weeks after Microsoft blocked Windows 11 24H2 updates on certain Intel PCs, also because of BSOD problems.

At the time, the problem appeared to be a sound driver used in Intel Core and Intel Atom processors. The workaround was to update the driver to a newer version.

This time, no further details or workarounds have been provided but it is worth noting that both X415KA and X515KA are powered by Intel 10th/11th generation chips.

Windows 11 24H2 update problems are further magnified by the fact that version 22H2 Home and Pro have reached their end of servicing and got their last security update this month.

The situation pushes a large number of users to upgrade their OS to the latest, actively supported version, which started to roll out at the beginning of the month.

Other problems that users reported after upgrading to Windows 11 24H2 include gaming performance issues (partially resolved), responsiveness issues with apps using the camera (unresolved), and Disk Cleanup misreporting available space (unresolved).
