Google Announces New Activations for Black History Month
Google has announced a range of activations for Black History Month, which is being celebrated throughout February.
First off, Google’s highlighting Black creators on YouTube, including rising stars and established voices.
As per Google:
“Head over to YouTube Music for playlists that highlight regional dance genres like Chicago House and NOLA Bounce. And don't miss the vibrant artwork by Stonie Blue across YouTube throughout the month.”
Google will also showcase the same in the main Google app, highlighting content and creators that align with the event.
Google will also showcase movies and TV shows from Black creators on Google TV.
“Available all month long on the For You page, we’re highlighting the brilliance of Black stories and experiences in a curated collection. Either through your subscriptions or for free with ads, you can catch shows like Key & Peele and Power, miniseries like Roots and films like Monster's Ball.”
Google’s also focusing on Black creators on Google Arts and Culture, with a new feature of works by Elizabeth Catlett, and stories from the Amistad Research Center.
It’s also highlighting apps created by Black developers in the Google Play store:
While it’s also adding a range of new Chrome backgrounds created by Black artists, including Neka King, Olivia Fields, Derrick Ofosu Boateng and more.
You can download these backgrounds to your Chrome browser by visiting the Chrome Web Store.
These are some interesting activations, which will both raise awareness of the event, and of Black history in general, across Google’s most popular apps.
Black History Month serves an important purpose, in highlighting the contributions of the Black community, and reminding everyone of the history of oppression that’s been part of this story. That may be even more prescient in today’s divisive times, which could mean that these new activations will serve an even more valuable application this time around.
